Studio Journey

In the 2012-13 academic year the Emergent studio explored the themes of ‘places of spirit’ and ‘edges of time’. Our first design project was intended as a response and display of the cultural immersion and understanding garnered from our travels throughout Scandinavia. Our focus whilst there was to explore the meaning of spirituality, and ponder what constitutes such a space.

Our second transgression was a journey to the southern condition, to explore the architecture in Morocco and the Atlas mountains which border the Sahara. We were encouraged to think about the understandings we had accumulated from the Nordic and consider how they might transpose to a different situation. This culminated in a final design project.

Nick

Nick’s story began in the picturesque countryside of Somerset. From this quaint, rural corner of the world he set out, roaming across the land; throughout Europe; to the distant Americas; and onto the mystic lands of Asia. The pilgrimage gave direction to his thoughts. He contemplated the intrinsic connections of the human condition to landscape and cultural desires, but above all he pondered the work of Jørn Utzon.

Such was Nick’s pondering, it is said he delved deep into the cavernous depths of the great ocean of architectural thought. Here, just as his last gasps of air were to be spent, Nick experienced an epiphany which granted him a new intake of breath. Breaching the boundary on return, he surfaced to discover a vessel sailing to the edge of time. It was a voyage ordained for him. Thus he climbed aboard, joining the Emergent crew members and their journey in the pursuit of the yet unknown.

Whilst not immersed in architecture, Nick is a keen athlete and enjoys running, rowing, and driving his combined harvester.

Andy

Andy emerged from his undergraduate studies in 2010. After an experiential and enlightening year of poetics in practice, Andy continued his journey into the void. Yearning for a return of something similar to the Germanic milieu of his upbringing, his pilgrimage took him to the temple of architectural Technology in Vienna. At the edge of time he ventured deep within himself, transcending his perception of place and architectural thought. On returning to the familiarity of his coastal home, Andy continued his educational journey with a rediscovered enthusiasm.

At the temple in Portsmouth, Andy sought companionship in the Emergent studio, immersing himself in exciting and stimulating intellectual thought and activity. And thus his expedition into the unknown has begun…

Whilst not pondering the limits of the architectural void, Andy delights in skiing, rock-climbing and a touch of salsa dancing!

Alex

It is said that Alex once drank from the river that feeds Yggdrasil, the great tree of the world. He grew to mythic proportions, such that the envious Thor struck away his voice. Taking pity, Odin reversed the spell but decreed that his words should be only those of wisdom. Thus the tranquil giant walks among men, his prospect glimpsing the abode of the gods. Yet forever did Valhalla call, challenging him to earn his place in the hall of heroes. His voyage took him to the far reaches of the earth, across the Pyrenean Mountains of France, into the darkest forests, and to the frozen chill of the Nordic lands. In Trondheim he meditated upon the Tectonics of Architecture for half a rotation around Sunna’s great globe of the light.

Deep within the realms of introspective study Alex comprehended the inherent poetics of place. His travels igniting an appreciation of the potentials of cultural and climatic disparities, Alex divined his path ahead. Through reflections on the Phenomenology of architecture, Alex now stands to challenge conventional thinking within the western world of architecture by exploring how meaning in architecture can re-establish and enliven a sense of existential being in humans. Whilst not pursuing his journey to Valhalla, Alex enjoys playing the drums, cycling and tickling people from 2 meters away.

Simon

In ancient times the Phoenicians gifted the western world with the origins of the Latin alphabet. Years passed and it became time, yet again for them to bestow another gift – thus was delivered Simon.

It is said that when Simon was only 12, he stumbled upon the tree of knowledge and gorged himself upon its fruit. However, the great understanding gained was entwined with a beard of wisdom and thus Simon was forever bounded to nurture and tame its locks, lest he sever the connection.

If ever anyone poses a query, Simon and his magnificent beard are ever-present to provide an encyclopedic response. Whilst not syncing with the all-seeing branches of knowledge Simon also loves attending train conventions.

Ryan

His name is Ryan.

Kayleigh

Kayleigh was once just like any other girl, however one day she slipped through an edge in time. Venturing deep into the hinterlands of this temporal realm, she discovered something that transcended all knowledge of the world around her.

She does not disclose the information that she gained that day, but she can often be seen immersing herself with place and collecting fragmented memories. Kayleigh also boasts a superb collection of stones!

Ilhana

From her Balkan origins Ilhana ventured into the north and discovered a life in the mystical realms of Norway. An unrelenting desire for adventure took her to lands of Denmark from where she looked across the oceans in anticipation and longing. Like the ancients of her new-found homeland, Ilhana set out across the seas to conquer a new domain. Her arrival in the Saxon lands came with the discovery of the Emergent studio.

With a challenging battle cry, Ilhana displayed her fearless ability to run with the pack, affirming her place in the Emergent brotherhood. Whilst not exploring new lands and venturing into the forest, Ilhana immerses herself in music and new cultures. Ilhana has a deep appreciation for nature and the beauty there inherent; seasonal changes, the emergence of new life in spring, and the sensation of being at one with the natural surroundings – especially when skinny dipping!
